Susan Thompson has been awarded the Texas Wildlife Fund’s 2011
grant for her volunteer work in conservation and environmental
education. She is one of the founders and a current board member
of the Panhandle Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist Program,
through which she has contributed over 2000 hours of her time to
nature-related volunteer service. This service has included the
wildlife viewing blind and “bird waterfall” at Palo Duro Canyon
State Park, the VFW Audubon Nature Trail in Canyon, Texas
Horned Lizard Watch surveys at Wildcat Bluff Nature Center, Black-
tailed Prairie Dog Watch surveys at Greenways Park in Amarillo,
and leading nature hikes and other interpretive programs for school
groups and the public. She is a coordinator and compiler for local
Christmas Bird Counts, conducts Breeding Bird Surveys, has been
Field Trip Coordinator for the Panhandle Bird Club, is a long-time
member of the Amarillo Chapter of the Texas Native Plant Society,
and serves on the board of the Texas Panhandle Audubon Society.
Susan is part of the team working on a current project, nearing
completion, at Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This project,
a Challenge Cost-Share Agreement between U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service and Texas Panhandle Chapter of the Texas Master
Naturalists, will rehabilitate Redpoll Cove as a source of water for
migrant songbirds through the drilling of a water well and
construction of a “waterdrip” pool.
Susan has a B.S. in Biology, with Honors, and a B.S. in
Mathematics, with Honors, from Oklahoma State University and is a
resident of Amarillo, Texas.
Rio applauds Susan’s volunteer work and the resulting improved
habitat and the increased appreciation and understanding of Texas
birds and wildlife.
The Texas Wildlife Fund is sponsored by Rio Petroleum, Inc., its
affiliates and private individuals. Its purpose is to provide grants to
persons involved in the conservation and preservation of Texas
birds and wildlife and the associated critical habitat.
